ProgramsChild-Focused Development: Education

Education

Maripet, a fourth grader in Kenya, is late for school almost every morning.  He's late, not because he doesn't wake early enough for the three-hour walk to school, but because he can't leave the house until the sun comes up and there is less chance of being attacked by wild animals along the rocky path.

The trek to school every day is not just inconvenient; it also means that Maripet and the other children from his village miss some of their morning classes.  Through a Christian Children's Fund-supported program, their teacher stays after school to help these students make up what they missed in the morning classes.

In addition to supporting formal school programs, CCF works with families and village leaders to develop community-based solutions that overcome any obstacles standing in the way of basic education for children.

When children in developing countries are asked what they want most, the resounding answer is education.  For the first time in history, primary education is a reality in many developing countries.  CCF’s education programs strive to create an environment conducive to the increased participation of children in school and improved classroom performance. Programs facilitate education by providing direct support, including school supplies, mid-day meals and payment of school fees, for children.

How CCF Helps

Primary Education — Education is essential to a child’s success.  In order to give children every opportunity to excel in school, CCF programs include primary education activities to help children prepare for formal education.

Non-Formal Education — CCF faces a great challenge in reaching the most at-risk children.  In order to provide programs for diverse communities, CCF’s education solutions must be innovative, flexible and practical.  CCF responds with non-formal education opportunities that suit the needs of children and communities.

Girl Child Education — Education for girls is a key aspect of CCF’s education programs. Educational programs help girls learn to read, learn a trade and learn to make decisions for themselves.  In addition, CCF staff raises community awareness about the importance of educating girls.  And staff advocate on behalf of girls to prevent arranged marriages that take girls out of school at an early age.

Literacy Programs — Literacy programs provide opportunities for children and communities to learn to read. Literacy programs include mobile libraries and after-school reading programs.

Dream Corners  Activities are designed to inspire children and complement traditional learning.  With a variety of books, toys and stimulating decorations, dream corners represent a place where children can use their imagination to transcend their current circumstances.

If you would like to help, you may contribute to our Children's Greatest Needs Fund. This is our general fund used for developing, operating and providing life-sustaining programs for children and families. Contributions to Children's Greatest Needs are essential to help CCF in its mission to improve the lives of children.
