ProgramsChild-Focused Development: Health & Sanitation

Health & Sanitation

It's the children that are unknowingly impacted by the scourge of HIV/AIDS. The typical scenario as follows: men bring the deadly virus home to their wives and then the wives unknowingly pass it on to their children at birth.

Such is the case for four-year-old Irene.

Her father, a policeman, died first of AIDS.  Then her mother, a nurse, died.  And now Irene is dying.  As we entered her hut, we found Irene sleeping on a mat on the floor.  Home care providers were there to teach Irene's grandparents how to care for Irene in her final months and days.

HIV/AIDS is one of the major infectious diseases CCF is combating in countries where we work.

Other Infectious Diseases

Insecticide bed nets prevent malariaDeadly diseases, some preventable by simple childhood immunizations, continue to take away children’s lives and hopes for the future.  CCF battles childhood diseases, and conducts diarrhea and malaria prevention programs, while improving access to clean water and proper sanitation in more than 1,000 CCF-affiliated communities throughout the world.

How CCF Helps

Infectious Diseases: Working with health providers, CCF strives to protect children and communities from malaria and tuberculosis.  Also, CCF has developed and implemented a seven point strategy system for combating the growing HIV/AIDS crisis.

Safe Water: The organization's water programs is to help families access safe water to protect against childhood disease and to manage water resources efficiently.

Health Interventions: CCF uses community-based approaches to help families and caregivers recognize if children have Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) and where to seek treatment. Other interventions include prenatal care, immunization and reproductive planning.

Safe Motherhood Program: Emphasis on a child's health starts with the mother.  Maternal Health programs, including the Grannies Program and the Safe Motherhood Program ensure that children receive proper care from the beginning stages of life.

If you would like to help, you may contribute to our Children's Greatest Needs Fund. This is our general fund used for developing, operating and providing life-sustaining programs for children and families. Contributions to Children's Greatest Needs are essential to help CCF in its mission to improve the lives of children.
